What is Matcha

Matcha is a variety of green tea that originally comes from traditional Japanese tea ceremonies. In Japan, ritual tea drinking is a slow process where people enjoy the drink slowly and mindfully, which is why Matcha is usually associated with Zen and meditation. Inspired by Japanese traditions, the Matcha latte is a perfect combination of powdered tea and milk. Matcha contains l-theanine, known as having a calming effect but at the same time keeping you alert.

You can prepare matcha in several ways according to your preferences.

  • Standard consistency – 1 teaspoon matcha mixed with 60 ml or 2 ounces of hot water
  • Thin consistency or Usucha in Japanese – half teaspoon matcha mixed with  90-118 ml or 3-4 ounces of hot water

Traditional Green Tea Vs Matcha

While regular green tea is left in hot water to infuse its properties, with Matcha you drink the actual leaves, powdered. Matcha tea also has a different production process – the Matcha leaves are shielded from the sun for 20-30 days before being harvested, which gives the tea a deeper taste. Matcha also has a higher amount of caffeine compared to regular tea.

Health Benefits of Matcha

  • Regulates blood sugar.
